November 11thLook through your Reading Power packet. It is a large white envelope that contains a reading log, donation log, prize list and instructions. We highly encourage you to set up a personalized online fundraising page for your student. Find out how at here. (Note: personalized fundraising pages are not public. Personalized page links can be shared with friends and family).
November 11th to 28th
November 11th to 28thREAD: During the read-a-thon, read each day. Write down the minutes you spend reading on your reading log. Try to reach your total minutes-read goal.
RAISE MONEY: Ask friends, neighbors, and family members to sponsor you by donating money for the time you spend reading. Encourage them to donate online. Make it easy for them by setting up your own fundraising page! Write down each donation on your donation log.
REPORT: On Mondays and Thursdays, use the simple online check-in form (bit.ly/rp-checkin) to report your total minutes and donations. If you complete your online check-ins on Mondays and Thursdays, your progress will be celebrated on your school display and on ReadingPowerFun.org on Tuesdays and Fridays. (The check-in form is required to track your progress, and for you to be eligible for prizes. Displays will not be updated on the school holiday, Friday, November 26th).

What is Reading Power?
Now in its 18th year, Reading Power is a fun two-week Read-a-thon. The event encourages the love of reading and directly involves students fundraising for our schools. Students log the amount of time they read, and seek donations from friends and extended family for their schools. Donations are made to SchoolForce (a.k.a. Belmont-Redwood Shores Public School Foundation). SchoolForce is the fundraising organization for the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District. When is Reading Power? November 11th to 28th, 2021.
How does it work?
A Reading Power packet will be distributed to students on the first day of the event. It is a large white envelope that includes a reading log, donation log, and instructions. Students record the amount of time they spend reading on their reading log each day. (TK/Kindergartners and first graders can count the amount of time they are read to in their totals.) Students are encouraged to ask friends, neighbors, and extended family to make donations for their reading efforts. Reading Power packets (with reading logs and donation logs) must be returned by December 3, 2021.
How is my child’s progress recognized during the read-a-thon?
Parents/guardians initial each line of the student’s reading log daily. Twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays), parents/ guardians complete an online check-in form (bit.ly/rp-checkin) to report the total minutes and donations. Students are recognized on their school’s Reading Power display and ReadingPowerFun.org based on the totals reported on this form.
Are there prizes for participating?
Yes! The class with the highest participation wins a party. Top Fundraisers win prizes and 1000 Minute Club members will earn a prize at the end of the event. Remember, to be considered a participant and to be eligible for any prizes, students must turn in a completed Reading Power packet by December 3rd, with at least one donation.
What is the 1000 Minute Club?
Students who read 1000+ minutes during Reading Power, receive at least one donation, and turn in their Reading Power packet on time join the 1000 Minute Club. 1000 Minute Club members earn a prize at the end of the Read-a-thon.
How can our friends and family sponsor my child?
We strongly prefer online donations made via your student’s personalized fundraising page or our website: schoolforce.org/rpd. To set up a personalized online fundraising page for your student see instructions here. Remember to write donations on your paper donation log, and report donation totals when you check in online at
bit.ly/rp-checkin
Is a Reading Power donation different than my annual SchoolForce donation?
Yes. While we welcome all donations, SchoolForce encourages parents and students to use Reading Power as a way to encourage grandparents, neighbors, and extended family to make donations for students’ reading efforts. Many friends and family find this the perfect way to support your child’s academic success and show they care about your child’s school. Parents/guardians should still make their suggested donation of $1550 per child (or as much as they can afford) during the school year ending June 30, 2022.
Matching makes a big difference!
Matching is an easy way to increase your donation! Last year Reading Power raised an additional $56,504 just from matching. To see if your company matches, or for more information, visit: schoolforce.org/matching
How much does Reading Power raise for our schools?
Last year, Belmont-Redwood Shores students read 2.1 million minutes to raise $347,225 to support their schools. Those funds support literacy programs, science, music, technology, sports, counselors, and more.
